St John celebrates 90 years of first aid Cadets worldwide by launching a new website

On 3 September 2012 St John Ambulance Australia proudly launches its new national website to celebrate 90 years of first aid Cadets across the globe. The website is targeted at the recruitment of young volunteers to both the Junior (aged 8–11) and Cadet (aged 12–17) programs, plus adult leaders who volunteer their time to facilitate the program. The website is a fantastic reference point for parents/guardians interested in finding volunteering or youth development opportunities for their children.

‘The St John Cadet program has been operating in Australian since 1925. We are incredibly proud of our Junior and Cadet programs in Australia and of our long history internationally. In Australia, we have a strong youth development focus and as a result our young members develop important life skills that will benefit them well into adulthood. Through the programs, our Juniors and Cadets have the opportunity to work as part of a team, give time and effort to help others, experience a sense of achievement, form friendships, and learn life-saving first aid skills all while having a great time,’ said Helen Banu-Lawrence, Chief Cadet Officer.

‘Our youth development program cannot operate without motivated and dedicated leaders, which is why we have included a focus on recruiting adult leaders in the website. Being an adult leader and seeing young people develop and grow is such a rewarding experience,’ Mrs Banu-Lawrence went on to say.

Peter LeCornu, Australian Chief Executive Officer, comments that ‘St John Ambulance Australia has a goal of making first aid a part of everyone’s life. This website will go a long way in the recruitment of more young people and adult leaders who volunteer their time to facilitate this fantastic program. If we increase the number of St John Juniors and Cadets, we increase the number of Australians we have trained in life saving first aid—this develops a culture of first aid awareness and the willingness to act in an emergency.’
